Part 1

Fractals

Part 2

Building and unfolding solids

Part 3

Drawing a solid on flat paper

What you will be able to do

  • State what self-similarity claims about a shape, in the form "this part, magnified, is the whole"
  • Prove that joining the midpoints of an equilateral triangle cuts it into four identical equilateral triangles, using the chapter's own hint about the corner triangles
  • State the snowflake's construction rule in the two steps the chapter gives, and restate it as "each side becomes a bump"
  • Apply the magnify-a-part test to a photograph or a textile and decide whether the structure is self-similar
  • Perform a described operation on an imagined shape and report the result, without drawing
  • Define a net as the surface of a solid unfolded onto a plane, and say what the definition excludes
  • State why a path on a cuboid's surface and its image on the net have equal length
  • Define the projection of a point on a plane using the perpendicularity condition the chapter states
  • State what makes a projection isometric, in terms of the projected lengths of a cube's edges
  • Identify the three families of grid directions and match each to an axis of the solid

What this chapter assumes you already know

  • Reading a labelled sequence of diagrams as successive states of one process, not as three unrelated pictures
  • That a shape can be scaled down without changing its shape
  • Congruence and identical copies — that two shapes can be the same shape at different sizes
  • Area of a square and of a triangle, at the level of "this piece is one-ninth of that piece"
  • Powers with whole-number exponents, enough to read 8² and 8³ as repeated multiplication (Power Play material)
  • Comfort with the idea of "keep going forever" as a description of a process, even without any formal notion of a limit
  • Powers with whole-number exponents, and reading 8ⁿ and 3ⁿ as repeated multiplication
  • Area of a square and of a triangle, and the idea of a fraction of an area

Where people usually slip up

Sentences students actually say, taken from the notes the videos were made from. Each one is answered on the page of the video it belongs to.

  • "The picture on the page is the fractal."
  • "Self-similar just means it has a repeating pattern."
  • "Any shrinking sequence gives a fractal."
  • "The rule is applied to the original shape over and over."
  • "Nature's fractals go on forever too."
  • "Removing pieces forever must leave nothing."
  • "Rₙ₊₁ = 8Rₙ is just an observed pattern."
  • "Hₙ₊₁ = Hₙ + Rₙ because a hole appears in each hole."
